Debut ‘Formerly Known As Cinema,’ a Film News and Commentary Site

Hollywood, film, cinema, the movies, or whatever it’s called now, has an entertaining new resource for news, reviews and cutting-edge commentary. Once a featured section on Art Report Today, Formerly Known As Cinema debuts as a stand-alone news site. The title promises an in-depth focus on this very American and wildly-evolving artistic medium.

Publishing daily since April 1, 2019, the aggregated Art Report Today .com offers over 150 articles and videos devoted to the fine arts and culture. Their film section became known for early reporting with smart content choices and must-know news. Today, Formerly Known As Cinema offers an easy-to-read experience with the best writers, latest trailers and film clips.

The site, Formerly Known As Cinema, is aptly titled. Film, as we know it, bears no resemblance to the filmgoing experience before the Covid lockdowns. Technologies and streaming have changed the time honored ceremony of film exhibition. The quarantines dealt the fatal blow to our theatre attendance. “We have no choice but to look at and experience cinema in a new way,” says Editor-in-Chief Gordy Grundy, “Have we seen the last of that much-loved communal experience? Can that ever exist again? What will it look like?”

At Formerly Known As Cinema, the lead film critic is Justin Tanner, best known as a Los Angeles playwright. “His commentary comes from a very wise and observed creative place,” says Grundy, “His insights are interesting and fascinating. Plus, he will make you laugh.”

Technological innovation in film production is a focus of the Formerly Known As Cinema site. Digital imaging has opened new worlds for the film creator, yet raises questions of authenticity, narrative storytelling and the human experience. The changes, and the potentials, are enormous.

One of the most exciting new developments in film is the ‘experiential.’ Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) headsets promise an immersion into digital worlds. Filmmakers today are more cognizant of sound and sound design, which serve as a narrative and aural immersive tool. Film composers such as Hans Zimmer, Jóhann Jóhannsson and the team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are leaning into sound, not necessarily music.

Editor-in-Chief Gordy Grundy arrives with long experience in film marketing and promotion for many of the studios. His detailed research into a film would generate marketing concepts which he would project manage. “I learned early how to intuit the winners from the stinkers,” says Grundy.

Formerly Known As Cinema is highly curated,” says Gordy Grundy, “with a strong spotlight onto new talents that we must encourage and the seasoned creators who we applaud.”
