February 2011 – Dates TBD

Tickets: $35

M Ensemble, Florida’s oldest existing black theater group, celebrates the glorious millinery of church-going African-American women with CROWNS, a play with music, at the Adrienne Arsht Center.  Written by Regina Taylor, and based on Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry’s book Crowns, Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, the stunning stage adaptation highlights the role of hats in Southern black culture, the endurance of black women in the South, and the unconquerable urge for self-expression.  CROWNS traces the journey of Yolanda, a street-smart kid from Brooklyn sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina after her brother is shot.  Culture clash ensues when Yolanda’s hip-hop swagger clashes with the down-home church crowd. Lively speeches, songs, dances, and dramatic action shape this touching story of one young woman’s journey and a community’s sacred history.  CROWNS delivers the gospel on hats!
