Chamber Music: Marsalis’ Fiddler’s Tale

Chamber Music: Marsalis’ Fiddler’s Tale

Sun‌day, Mar‌ch 2‌4 at 2:‌00 P‌M
New World Center

In a feat of musical storytelling, jazz legend Wynton Marsalis recontextualizes Igor Stravinsky’s famous Soldier’s Tale. Through jazz, tango, blues and other elements of Wynton Marsalis’ sound world, New World Symphony tells the story of a deal with the devil gone wrong. This staged production features immersive visuals and narration from actor Nic Few.

This concert sees New World Symphony partnering with multidisciplinary artist Gary Simmons. Gary Simmons’s visual accompaniment to A Fiddler’s Tale presents a series of still images that harmonize with Wynton Marsalis’s symphonic score, tracing the arc of the fiddler’s Faustian bargain. Simmons weaves a sense of place together with historic images of Black life in the Jim Crow South through to the Disco Era. Here, elements of visual culture and history coalesce with, and sometimes struggle against, our collective memory, haunting our present with an unfinished past.

Wynton Marsalis will not perform at this concert.
