Ascension Carnival “Mas” (Masquerade) Band announces the unveiling of their costumes for the 2011 Miami-Broward Carnival at their band launch party to be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Photopia Studios in Miami, FL. The party promises to attract various artists and political leaders from the Caribbean community; in attendance will be the Haitian consul and Soca international-recording artist Siswe, just to name a few. With the Carnival Season just around the corner, the band launch party sets the tone for this year’s “Parade of the Bands” to be held at Sun Life Stadium on October 9, 2011. “With multiple bands, competing to win the title of “Band of the Year”, an early buzz has been created by a new band called Ascension” explains Yvette Harris, Public Relations Manager for the Miami-Broward One Carnival Committee.

The 2011 parade will feature over 20 masquerade bands over a 6-mile route. Each band follows a music truck and has a theme “portrayal” which they bring to life on Carnival day. Ascension has titled its inaugural theme for the 2011 carnival season, “Eau de Vie”- (Water of Life). The costumes are inspired by the wonders of the ocean, with colors and designs reminiscent of the most beautiful creatures of the sea. “Ascension aims to be the most colorful and culturally diverse band in the Miami-Broward Carnival this year” says Samuel Trotman, one of the band leaders.

Ascension is formed of 5 band leaders from various Caribbean islands with a mutual love of everything “Islandy”, the Caribbean culture and more specifically the Caribbean carnival. The group counts over 40 years of combined experience in coordinating special events, marketing and brand building. “Ascension’s goal is to raise the bar for masqueraders in this year’s Carnival and deliver a Carnival experience that can only be expressed as “Carnival on a Higher Level” which coincidentally is our motto” explains Nigel Braithwaite, one of the band leaders.

Miami Carnival has been an annual Event since 1984. Within two years of its inception, it had grown from a small neighborhood festival to an international event bringing live bands and “calypsonians” from all over the Caribbean. The present Miami Carnival (the Caribbean Mardi Gras) has become the foremost revenue-producing festival for South Florida and is the most popular Carnival in North America drawing spectators and masqueraders from all over the globe. Miami-Broward One Carnival Host Committee, Miami Carnival Inc. (MCI) and Broward Caribbean Carnival Inc. (BCCI) united in 2009, and hosted one of the most successful Carnivals in the world that attracted over 250,000 people on Carnival day. The annual event attracts over 100,000 people from throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean to the South Florida area. The unified Miami Carnival has a significant impact on annual tourism and the overall economy in South Florida.
