Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida announces new season of performances

After closing the last season with a greatly successful international dance festival where dancers convened from all over the world, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida is gearing up for an exciting new season.

The season opens in October, with the return of Harlequinade by the request of audiences after the successful premier in 2010. Originally made into a ballet in 1900 by Marius Petipa, with music by Riccardo Drigo, Harlequinade is a whimsical adventure following Harlequin and his lover, Columbina, as they outwit Columbina’s father, Cassander. On the same program Arts Ballet is also presenting new works of a guest choreographer and a new piece by Arts Ballet’s Artistic Director, Mr. Vladimir Issaev, in celebration of the artist Gustav Klimt’s work on the year of his 150th birthday. This performance will take place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center.

The company will then journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional audience favorite, The Nutcracker.  This holiday favorite depicts the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, travel to the Land of Sweets, enjoy festivities with delicious international treats, and finally travel home. This production will be put on at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center, Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, and the Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida is also excited to bring yet another fun ballet back to the Family Series this year: Fairy Doll. Fairy Doll, originally “Die Puppenfee,” by composer Josef Bayer, was first performed in 1888. Vladimir Issaev, inspired by Bayer’s beautiful music, could not let the opportunity to revive this ballet go. Between Bayer’s dazzling music, Issaev’s mesmerizing choreography, and Jorge Gallardo’s incredible costume designs, this production is a true masterpiece. Fairy Doll will be held at Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

For the close of the season, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will put on the Spring Gala, a magnificent showcase of the dancers talents through a variety of classical and neoclassical ballets. The dancers are trained for the Spring Gala by Vladimir Issaev and guest choreographers. This performance will show once in Broward and once in Miami Dade during the month of May.

In addition to these main productions, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will perform at other venues including the Willow Theater in Boca Raton and the Civic Center in Sunrise.  The troupe will also be appearing in various schools in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties, as they continue to educate young children about ballet in their education out-reach program.
