At The Standard Spa, acclaimed video artist Marco Brambilla, screened his newest piece, EVOLUTION (Megaplex) in front of hundreds of notable guests at a fete hosted by André Balazs, and Jefferson Hack.
With the Miami skyline in the background, guests including Michael Stipe, Jean Pigozzi, Benjamin Godsill, Anouck Lepere, Jeffrey Deitch, Bob Colacello, Dustin Yellin, Anthony Haden Guest, Remi Tessier, Todd Eberle, Richard Pandiscio, Rory Tahari, Fay Cantor Stephens, John Demsey, Brooke Geahan, Jay Joplin, Liz Swig, Joanne Casulo, Cecilia Dean, Johan Linderberg, Wendy, Stark, Renzo Rosso, Auarel Schmidt, CC Sheffield, Neville Wakefield, Sante D’Orazio, Victor Gelmaud, Andrew Cramer, Edward Chapman, Jaime Johnson, Jon Neidich, Leigh Lezark, Lorenzo Martone, Serge Becker, Rogan Gregory, Sean MacPherson, Angela Westwater, and more witnessed Brambilla’s EVOLUTION(Megaplex) through their 3-D Armani Exchange aviator glasses while they sipped cocktails at the Societe Perrier Bar poolside in front of the large screen. The piece is the first ever 3D Video Installation.
EVOLUTION (Megaplex), 2010 is an intricate video collage which depicts the history of conflict in humankind through the lens of cinema. In this never before seen work, Brambilla combines hundreds of sampled clips from genre films that re-enact significant moments in history as grand spectacle. This composition of images is looped and mapped into an infinite three-dimensional environment that scrolls horizontally across time. Evolution takes us on a whimsical journey through the ages, in a remix that seamlessly moves through past, present, and future, providing a satirical take on the bombast of the big-budget “epic.”
Brambilla is best known for the video collage technique he pioneered to create his epic 2009 video installation, Civilization (a permanent installation in the New York Standard hotel), which has been shown in Institutions in Europe, the Toronto Film Festival and Vancouver Olympics. His most recent video work was created to accompany Power, the new single by Kanye West brought him international acclaim. EVOLUTION (Megaplex), 2010 utilizes groundbreaking 3-D technologies, produced by The Mill, an academy award winning effects house. EVOLUTION (Megaplex), 2010 was created over the course of two years, incorporating thousands of clips from a vast archive of iconic Hollywood films.
Marco Brambilla is represented by the Christopher Grimes Gallery in Santa Monica, California, and his collection of works is available to view on www.marcobrambilla.com. A major retrospective of Mr. Brambilla’s works, spanning his 30 year artistic career, will be on display at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2011.
