GableStage Opens True Art Just in Time for Art Basel — and the Rest of the Season Is Just as Sharp
Jessica Provenz's wickedly funny art world comedy runs November 20 through December 20 at the Biltmore, timed perfectly to Art Basel. It's the second production in GableStage's 28th season, which also includes the Florida premieres of Joshua Harmon's We Had a World and Bess Wohl's Tony-winning Liberation.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
GableStage has timed its second production of the season with a precision that feels intentional. True Art by Jessica Provenz opens November 20 and runs through December 20 — which means it lands squarely in the middle of Art Basel Miami Beach and stays through the end of the month. The play is about deception, champagne, and Michelangelos: a wide-eyed art history major lands a job at a prominent museum and gets pulled into a fast-moving game of ambition, treachery, and lies. Berkshire on Stage called it 'a timely, wickedly smart comedy.' The timing could not be better.
True Art is directed by Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport and plays at the Wolfson Family Theatre inside the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables — 138 seats, no bad angle, and an Art Deco setting that adds its own layer of atmosphere to a play about the art world's more theatrical tendencies. Tickets are on sale now at gablestage.org.
The full 28th season is worth knowing. It opened with Weather Girl by Brian Watkins (September 25–October 18), a dark comedy about a California weather girl that the New York Times named one of the best plays of 2025. After True Art comes We Had a World by Joshua Harmon (January 22–February 14, 2027), a moving love letter to complicated families that the New York Sun called 'hilarious and touching.' Then Liberation by Bess Wohl (March 19–April 18, 2027), winner of the 2026 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama — its Florida premiere, with single tickets on sale November 10. The season closes with littleboy/littleman by Rudi Goblen (May 14–June 13, 2027), a Miami-rooted work blending poetry, live music, and ritual about two Nicaraguan-born brothers and the American Dream.
Four-show subscription packages start at $315 and include priority seating for Liberation before single tickets go on sale. Subscribe at gablestage.org or call (305) 445-1119, Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 PM.
