ART MIAMI 2015 Highlight

ART MIAMI

Art Miami is South Florida’s original and longest-running contemporary art fair, evolving and expanding tremendously since its inception 26 years ago. Art Miami returns this December as America’s No. 1 most-attended contemporary art fair and the second most attended in the world. Showcasing the most respected international galleries, the fair attracts more than 85,000 collectors, curators and art world luminaries annually to its 200,000 sq. ft. pavilion.

  • Time and Place:
    • VIP Preview presented by Merrill Lynch:  Tuesday, Dec. 1 from 5:30-10:00PM.

    • Diamonds Unleashed private event presented by Merrill Lynch: December 3
    • Art Miami, 3101 NE 1st Ave., Miami
  • Noteworthy pieces & exhibitions:
    • Ai Weiwei’s Owl Houses are crafted using traditional methods and delicately painted by hand. Ai Weiwei transforms the traditional Chinese porcelain garden stool into a living environment for birds. Covered in the blue-and-white designs associated with Ming Dynasty ceramics, these elegant and purposefully ornamental habitats evoke a range of associations regarding the notion of home and the transmission and transformation of culture through trade.
    • Pyramid Sculpture by Keith Haring
      • Anodized aluminum sculpture made in 1989
  • Sculpture by Antony Gormley to be showcased at the entrance
      • Available for sale: $550,000
      • Stainless steel sculpture made in 2000
    • Frank Stella
    • Curated sculptures from Alexander Calder, priced $10 million and $15 million
    • Self-proclaimed “storyteller” Bernie Taupin will have a significant presence at this year’s Art Miami. Known for his long-time collaboration with Elton John, Taupin is the lyricist behind hits turned classics like Bennie and the JetsCandle in the Wind and Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. Today, Taupin continues to express himself but in the visual arts, which will be exhibited at Art Miami.
      • Consider a trend story on celebrities/notable people who have become artists, ex: Adrien Brody, George W. Bush, Julian Lennon, Jemima Kirke, James Franco, etc.
    • Celebrating her 10th year with Art Miami Bernice Steinbaum presents her first-ever themed booth— “The Peaceable Kingdom,” inspired by Edward Hicks’ painting. The idea for the theme stemmed from the painting’s message that even in the most difficult circumstances, a lion and a lamb can coexist. Bernice invited four artists —Enrique Gomez de Molina, Troy Abbot, Carolla Bravo and Patrick Jacob—to deal with the subject based on today’s society, which could be an interesting angle tied to current events.
    • For the first time in the U.S., a selection of Salvador Dali’s fashion designs will be shown at Art Miami. His namesake is the theme of the booth, which is a dialogue of how Dali would interact in today’s world of technology.
