Miami Dade College’s 39th annual Miami Film Festival hosts its awards night at the Arsht Center. The evening will include a screening of Panamanian drama Plaza Catedral.
In the film, Alicia has lost her 6-year-old son in an accident. Plagued by grief and guilt, she disassociates from society, married life and herself.
She lives in the Old Quarter of Panama, a rich, colonial enclave surrounded by the country’s poorest neighborhoods. There, she meets Chief, a street-smart, 13-year-old boy who takes care of cars in front of her apartment building. One night, Chief arrives at Alicia’s home bleeding from a gunshot wound and begging her to let him in.
Directed by Abner Benaim, Plaza Catedral asks: How far would you go to help a stranger?
Also a producer and screenwriter, Benaim is considered a pioneering filmmaker in Panama. His films include Chance and Ruben Blades Is Not My Name and have been Panama’s official selection for the Academy Awards on three occasions.
The evening will begin with the award ceremony at 7 p.m. followed by the screening of Plaza Catedral at 8 p.m.
