ALEX TRIMINO - STITCHING THE GAP at Lowe Art Museum

Diana Lowenstein Gallery is thrilled to announce a new, site-specific installation by Miami based artist Alex Trimino. “Stitching the Gap” opens at the Lowe Art Museum on Thursday, October 6th at 7 pm and will be on view until January 29, 2023.

Please come to see this interactive artwork and speak with the artist at the unveiling.

Curator Lance Fung states, “It is a huge honor to be invited as guest curator for the new, six part exhibition series for the Project Room at the Lowe Art Museum. Strategically placing “Stitching the Gap as the inaugural exhibition will allow all visitors to walk through the artwork or see it glowing, like a beacon, throughout the evening. I still recall my impression from my first studio visit and was amazed by the unique cross cultural material selection, conceptual rigor and social depth Alex embeds in all her work”.

Lit from within and enveloped in crocheted and knitted elements, this installation is emblematic of Alex Trimino’s multi-media practice. While initially disinclined to knit, crochet, and weave—seeing these processes as tied to domestic labor in her native Colombia—Trimino explored them anew with a geometrical interest. Incorporating both craft materials like yarn and fiber with high tech ones like micro-controlled neon, she examines the intersectionality of technology, gender, and societal norms. A delicate balance between continuity and change, this installation encourages viewers to reflect on how the past informs the present.

Alex shares her impetus by saying, “My installations re-contextualize the traditional use of colloquial, lo-tech crafts; crochet, knittings and weavings exploring social views on civilization, technology and gender”. She continues, “Illuminated totem poles, covered in crochet, knittings and found objects reveal the similarities between the modern, hi-tech materials used (micro-controlled neon lights) and the colloquial, lo-tech crafts used (crochet, knittings and weavings); creating an equilibrium between traditions, technologies and generations. Old ways and new technologies commingle together; exploring how we connect to reality today. I use embroidery and technology, creating a connection between past and present.”

“Stitching the Gap” is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the Lowe Art Museum and she continues to live and work in Miami.

This project is sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture (Section 286.25, Florida Statues), and made possible with support from Oolite Arts.
