“ALAIN RESNAIS: Then and Now”

WILD GRASS

(Les herbes folles)

(Directed by Alain Resnais/France/2009/104mins.)

With André Dussolier, Sabene Azéma, Mathieu Amalric

A wallet lost and found opens the door – slightly – to Georges and Marguerite’s romantic adventure. After examining the ID of its owner, it is not a simple matter for Georges to turn in to the police the red wallet he has found. Nor can Marguerite retrieve her wallet without being piqued with curiosity about the person who found it. As George and Marguerite navigate the social protocols of giving and acknowledging thanks, turbulence enters their everyday lives.  One of the acknowledged masters of cinema has returned in glorious form with a vibrant, life-affirming film that certainly provides its share of joyous surprises. Alain Resnais has made some of the essential works in the history of the medium. As Wild Grass shows, Resnais’s talent still flames bright.  (In French with English subtitles.)

Opening Night New York Film Festival

“As the camera glides and loop-de-loops through the 88-year-old Alain Resnais’s surreal romantic comedy Wild Grass primary colors take on a luminescent glow. Objects — a yellow car, a red dress, a blue doorway, even traffic lights — assume the heightened visual intensity of symbols in a waking dream.”-Stephen Holden, New York Times
