AH-TAH-THI-KI MUSEUM DEBUTS TO SING AS A GROUP: MULTIPLE VOICES OF SEMINOLE MUSIC

The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum of the Seminole Tribe of Florida is pleased to debut To Sing as a Group: Multiple Voices of Seminole Music from January 17 through August 25, 2014. Come celebrate the variety of voices that make up Seminole music.  Moving beyond the traditional music, this exhibition explores how Seminole musicians use mainstream genres to convey Seminole values and culture.  Seminole musicians use everything from hymns to rap to depict a strong, enduring people who value their history and their language.  This exhibition features hymnals, memorabilia, songs, and videos by Seminole musicians, including James Billie, Zac ‘Doc’ and Spence Battiest, and the Osceola Brothers Band.

An opening reception is planned for Saturday, March 15, from 2 to 4 pm, at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum and will feature a walk through the exhibit led by the Curator, refreshments, and an “open mic” for musicians.

 

“The new exhibit, To Sing as a Group, demonstrates the strength and resilience of Seminole culture,” said the Museum’s Operations Manager Dr. Annette Snapp.  “Throughout the variety of music genres presented, traditional Seminole values continue to be honored and celebrated.  We encourage anyone interested in Seminole culture or music to make their way to the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation to hear and experience for themselves some examples of Seminole music through the generations in this interactive exhibit.”
