FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9 @ 8:00PMWith over 60 performances at various venues throughout the United States in 2011, Yamil Piedra and Johnny Trabanco, better known as “A Pair of Nuts,” are the only Emmy Award winning, nationally touring Hispanic comedy duo. This year the Nuts traveled to colleges, comedy clubs, and military bases nationwide with their live stage show. But Piedra and Trabanco are hometown boys and they’re proud of it. That’s why they chose their hometown of Miami, FL as the last city in their 2011 tour. With the growing comedy scene in South Florida, the Nuts are proud to represent Miami wherever they go. “We want everyone to know we’re from Miami,” says Cuban born Piedra. “I grew up in Miami and Johnny was born here.”
With an ever growing fan base thanks to their online videos, there’s a reason they were named “Hot Comedy” for 2011 by Campus Activities Magazine. Having had their Gayo video featured on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, an interview segment on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly, winning an Emmy Award for writing sketch comedy, and most recently working on a prank show with Beach Pictures in association with Electus, and being selected to showcase at the 2012 NACA National Convention, Yamil and Johnny are well on their way to bigger things. And there’s something to be said about their success considering sketch comedy is a style of comedy that is out of the norm when it comes to touring. “Most venues, especially comedy clubs, are used to stand up comedy,” says Trabanco. “But that’s what sets us apart from everyone else.” At first bookers are hesitant to book the Nuts, but once they get on that stage, they own the crowd.
Piedra and Trabanco have been performing together since 1998 and it becomes relevant in their infectious chemistry on stage. And even though they are Hispanic, they don’t limit themselves to Latin themed comedy. Whether it’s a college in Massachusetts or a military base in Virginia, these Nuts have proven time and time again that their comedy is universal.
