Mozart was finishing up The Magic Flute when he was approached with an anonymous commission he couldn’t refuse. He was asked to write a Requiem, and he would be paid half upfront.

When he fell ill and died suddenly at the age of 37, Mozart had completed only one movement and the skeleton of a Requiem designed to shock: unexpected chords, startling intimacy and the only time Mozart ever used a trombone.

So, who finished Mozart’s swan song?

Intent on collecting full payment, rumor has it Constanze secretly hired another composer, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, to complete her husband’s work. But many, including Constanze, argued that Mozart dictated the “unwritten” sections to friends from his sickbed.
