6th Annual Gables Bike Day

unnamed-31On Sunday, March 12, for the sixth year, Coral Gables is holding Gables Bike Day, patterned after Ciclovia in Bogota, Colombia and Summer Streets in New York City. The all-day event is organized by Bike Walk Coral Gables (BWCG), a community-based non-profit organization that promotes biking and walking as a way to improve the environment and quality of life for local residents. With financial support and sponsorship from local businesses, Gables Bike Day is a celebration of biking and walking that makes streets in front of City Hall available to people by closing them off to motorized vehicles.

Gables Bike Day isn’t all about bicycling. Walkers, skateboarders, rollerskaters, unicyclists and any and every other non-motorized form of transportation is welcome. The free event, which runs from 11 a.m to 3 p.m., will also feature a host of activities, from exercise classes to kids’ bounce houses to a city-wide scavenger hunt.

The epicenter of Gables Bike Day will be in Merrick Park across from the historic Coral Gables City Hall, with car-free streets on Biltmore Way and Andalusia, from LeJeune Road to Segovia. Food trucks will offer a variety of lunch options, and free bike valet will be offered by Green Mobility Network. An event stage will host music from Shake 108, exercise classes, and a variety of giveaways.

BikeSafe, a University of Miami program, will host a bike rodeo to teach kids how to ride their bikes safely and follow the rules of the road. Children can also enjoy complimentary bounce houses, arts and crafts, and other family-friendly activities.

Bike tours will be scheduled hourly, departing to points of interests and local landmarks nearby in Coral Gables neighborhoods. These tours are led by trained ride leaders on safe routes and guided by local experts. Space will be limited; interested participants are encouraged to registrar early in the day. BWCG offers regular bike tours on the third Sunday of every month departing from the Coral Gables Museum, a Gables Bike Tours partner.
