CITIES ON SPEED

SERIES PREMIERE

Tuesday, April 20 at 8:30 pm ET/PT (Airs Tuesdays at 8:30 pm through May 11)

Sundance Channel premieres the four-part original documentary series Cities on Speed (airing Tuesdays at 8:30 pm). The hour-long portraits of four global cities – Bogota, Cairo, Mumbai and Shanghai – look at one of our greatest challenges: planning for future citizens in booming megalopolises. Cities on Speed is a wonderfully varied experience; that includes humor, lyricism, drama and surprise as well as a glimpse of the real life and potential futures of four of the globes busiest urban centers.

  • Tuesday, April 20 Cities on Speed: Cairo– Directed by Mikela Krogh.  “Cairo: Garbage” captures a city struggling to change its habits as it follows several people dealing with garbage in its various stages, including Ayman Samir, who owns a 5-star restaurant in a wealthy neighborhood; Taher Hanafy, a district manager for an Italian waste collection company; and Atif, who makes a living recycling plastic in one of the city’s famed “garbage villages.”
  • Tuesday, April 27 Cities on Speed: Mumbai – Directed by Camilla Nielsson and Frederik Jacobi.  Mumbai is like a city on steroids, and its propulsive growth has largely overwhelmed its existing transportation infrastructure.  Mr. R.K. Das is a vice president of the state road construction agency; it his job to make sure bridges and freeway overpasses are built on time and in accordance with environmental requirements imposed by the World Bank.  But the construction of new roads raises issues of class and wealth, as epitomized by the conflicting viewpoints of Yasin Patel, one of the many émigrés seeking a better life for himself and his family in Mumbai; and Veena Singhal, a wealthy, educated Mumbaiker who advocates for long-term solutions over short-term fixes, and is leading the charge against a proposed freeway in her neighborhood.
  • Tuesday, May 4 Cities on Speed: Shanghai– Directed by Nana Frank Møller.  Half a million people move to Shanghai every year, and the city is running out of space to house them.  Urban development professor Yu Shu envisions the next stage of Shanghai’s development taking place underground, and he leads his students in imagining how to bring terrestrial features – plants, sunlight – to subterranean spaces.  Meanwhile, new construction above ground continues at a breakneck pace as entire neighborhoods are razed to make way for new buildings and highways.  One resident who must now find a new place to live is Xixian Xu, an avid amateur photographer whose passion for Shanghai’s landscapes has resulted in a stunning record of a vanished environment.
  • Tuesday, May 11 Cities on Speed: Bogotá Directed by Andreas M. Dalsgaard.  Tracing the years 1995 to 2005, “Bogotá Change” is the surprising, inspiring story of how two charismatic, unorthodox mayors transformed one of the world’s most dangerous, violent and corrupt capitals into a model city of the future.  The first, the bearded academic Antanas Mockus, targeted Bogotá’s moral culture, with mimes, street theater, and mock vaccines among his teaching tools.  The other, Enrique Peñalosa, resolved to give the city an entirely new infrastructure, tackling everything from public plazas and libraries to sewage and public transportation.  With Mockus and Peñalosa and key members of their staff as first hand witnesses, the film uncovers the startlingly fresh ideas and strategies that helped them succeed.
