1st Annual Bike It For Life Benefits HIV/AIDS Services in Broward County

The 1st Annual Bike It For Life will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Price Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors at 5:30am. The event is a one day progressive century ride that allows bikers to choose their own distance of 15, 30, 60 or 100 miles. Bikers are encouraged to choose a comfortable distance, making it a wonderful opportunity for new riders to participate, as well. The ride will benefit local Broward County charities, including Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Poverello, The Pride Center, and SunServe which have programs that serve individuals living with HIV. Many of the programs involved also provide HIV prevention, testing and outreach.

Leaving Wilton Manors the ride will continue north eventually taking bikers on A1A by the ocean. The ride is fully supported with rest stops with water, Gatorade and snacks as well as SAG vehicles, sweep vehicles and a marked route. Since the event is being held the day before Mother’s Day, riders are encouraged to ride in honor or memory of their mothers or to ride with their moms. The ride will conclude with a celebration in honor of the mothers with a light brunch and photo exhibit at the Pride Center.

Bike It For Life is being organized by Glen Weinzimer and TSR Adventures, founders of the SMART Ride (Southernmost AIDS Ride), which raised over $860,000 at last November’s two day event. Bike It For Life is the first one day ride being produced by the team, whose goal is to move the ride to various counties and cities in Florida in order to help other organizations that help people living with HIV/AIDS.

“Bike it for Life is another example of Glen Weinzimer’s vision to promote HIV awareness by involving the local community. We are constantly amazed by his energy and enthusiasm and are proud to be a recipient of his efforts,” said Ana E. Calderon, Ph.D., Assistant Administrator at the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center.

Registration for the ride is currently open. The registration fee is $50 with riders raising an additional $250 to help support the benefiting agencies. Registration can be completed at www.bikeitforlife.org

The Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) is a not-for-profit organization that serves more than 10,000 children with special health care needs in Broward County.
