Li’l Shrimp Zone and Deering Discovery Cove Offer Fun-Filled Activities

Grab the kids, put on the sunscreen, and bring hearty appetites for the 12th Annual Deering Seafood Festival on the Bay on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 10 am ‘til 6 pm at the Deering Estate. In addition to fresh Florida seafood, chef demos and non-stop live entertainment, there is a large catch of fun-filled activities for children.
For your little ones, there will be a Li’l Shrimp Kids Zone, with unlimited play on inflatables, creative activities, healthy tastings and a kid-friendly menu when hunger strikes. But there’s even more in store for kids this year!

They can “Seas the Day” in Deering Discovery Cove Adventure, with fun, educational programming that incorporates interactive event stations with microscopes, dissections, touch tanks and art, all geared to teaching the importance of the world’s oceans.

These activities highlight the Deering Estate’s ongoing, hands-on Environmental Education Programs and Camps that serve more than 17,000 children annually.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES IN DEERING DISCOVERY COVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY INCLUDE:

Atlantic Ocean activity – Squid adaptation and lionfish dissection. Learn about invasive species, responsible pet ownership and farm-to-table. Theme: “Squid Adaptation and Dissection.”

Pacific Ocean activity – Touch tanks and Ocean Acidification. Drop chalk/shells in vinegar, and “beak” activity for fish. Learn about climate changes effecting coral reef and sea grasses. Theme: “Coral Reefs and Sea Grasses.”

Indian Ocean activity – Storm surge experiment and basics for kayaking/canoes. Learn about the benefits of mangroves. Theme: “Environmental Services.”

Southern Ocean activity – Microscope and blubber experiment. Learn about climate change and marine mammal adaptation. Theme: “From Plankton to Whales.”

Arctic Ocean activity – Eco-Art section for kids to paint, and interactive mural. Learn about up cycling and coastal cleanup.  Theme: “Without Blue, there is no Green.”

The entire family will enjoy a day filled with culinary delights and non-stop entertainment, including Virgin Island stilt walkers, Bahamian Junkanoo musical parades and live Caribbean musical performances throughout the Estate.

Ongoing activities include a rock-climbing wall, the Pelican Skipper pontoon boat rides to Chicken Key, and Artist Lane, featuring unique creations by local artisans.

Proceeds from the Deering Seafood Festival benefit the Deering Estate Foundation and are used for environmental education, preservation and programming.  A celebration renown for delicious catches from the sea, celebrity chefs and fun-filled adventures for the kids, the Festival features Florida’s freshest fish and seafood, with area restaurants and caterers providing sumptuous delights along Seafood Alley.

The festival takes place Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 10 am to 6 pm at the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72 Avenue, in Palmetto Bay (Miami).

Admission:  Adults $15 in advance online/ $25 the day of the event; children 4-14 years $5. Deering Estate Foundation members enjoy complimentary admission. Ticket includes park entrance and all activities, excluding food, drink, pontoon rides and rock wall.
