WHAT: The Veronicas are Jess and Lisa Origliasso, a pair of identical twin sisters from Brisbane, Australia who specialize in smart, stylish pop. Contrary to popular belief, the band name in fact did not come from a character in Archie Comics.”The name is something we thought about for a long time, and we wanted it to be a girl’s name, but we didn’t want it to be ‘the Jesses. So one day we saw the movie ‘Heathers,’ and there’s a line where one girl asks, ‘Are you a Heather?’ and Winona Ryder’s character answers, ‘No, I’m a Veronica,’ and so we went with that, because she was this kind of cool, unique chick with an attitude,” explained Lisa.Emerging at the height of mall pop-punk, the Veronicas were initially aligned with the likes of Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, on their debut The Secret Life Of…. After sticking with punky pop on Hook Me Up, the Veronicas broadened their purview on their eponymous album. By that point, the duo were superstars in their native Australia, popular enough that they retained their fame for an extended period without albums, a phase they broke in grand fashion by releasing the twin LPs Godzilla and Human in 2021. With five Australian Top Ten studio albums under their belt, they previewed their sixth LP, Gothic Summer, with the driving “Perfect” in late 2023. The girls write their own songs, and have also written songs for other artists. The Veronicas dislike being called a female duo. “We like being called a band or group. We don’t want to be a pop duo group with two girls singing about relationships, we have everything that a rock band would have, so we are a band,” says Lisa.
