The STAMPS FAMILY Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series presents: The Ying Quartet

The Ying Quartet performs regularly in many of the world’s most prominent concert halls, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. In residence at the Eastman School of Music, the group came to professional prominence in the 1990s when the National Endowment for the Arts funded their residency in Jesup, Iowa, a small farming community. During their residency, the Quartet enjoyed the opportunity to present music in a creative format and become an integral part of community life. This early experience laid the foundation for more recent productions, including their collaborative series, No Boundaries, which united actors, dancers, and other artists in performance with both traditional and contemporary string quartet music. The Ying Quartet’s recordings reflect the diversity of their musical interests. Their much-heralded collaboration with the Turtle Island Quartet, Four & 4, won a 2005 Grammy Award, and their 2007 Telarc release of the Tchaikovsky Quartets and the Souvenir de Florence received a Grammy nomination. Their most recent recording, Dim Sum, merges the Western string quartet with the aural world of traditional Chinese music. Committed to expanding the rich string quartet repertoire while creating music that reflects contemporary American life, the Ying Quartet created LifeMusic, an ongoing commissioning project that features the works of many renowned composers. Their recording of this exciting project, The Ying Quartet play LifeMusic, received an Editor’s Choice commendation from Gramophone magazine.
