SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE is an all-star jazz supergroup made up of Chris Potter on saxophone, David Sánchez on saxophone, Etienne Charles on trumpet, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, Edward Simon on keyboards, Matt Breweron bass, Kendrick A.D. Scott on drums, and Gretchen Parlato and Martin Luther McCoy on vocals.
Etienne Charles is currently an associate professor of studio music and jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
Founded in 2004, the SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE is a one-of-a-kind ensemble comprising some of the most creative and acclaimed improvisers, composers and bandleaders in jazz. It aims to celebrate and renew the jazz tradition, with each member writing a new work for the band annually as well as arranging standards by modern masters, embodying SFJAZZ’s commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form. This year’s project continues that strategy and features even more brand-new material.
New Works Reflecting the Moment documents new works from the all-star ensemble, addressing racial injustices, the global pandemic, and the unprecedented political polarization and upheaval we are currently facing in our daily lives. The program also includes fresh new approaches to a selection of classic songs associated with peace, freedom, and social commentary, including Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” the classic anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and “Throw it Away” by Abbey Lincoln.
Opening for SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE will be Miami quintet SHENZI, a multigenre band whose sound is an evolving reaction to elements old and new. The group’s music combines jazz roots, hip-hop grooves, soul and Miami’s Latin flair. With a focus on lyricism and the craft of songwriting, SHENZI is driven to tell a good story.
