Tate has announced a significant donation from philanthropists and collectors Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez, including 36 key works by prominent African and African diaspora artists. This gift enriches Tate’s collection with pieces from acclaimed artists like El Anatsui, Yinka Shonibare, Joy Labinjo, Bruce Onobrakpeya, and others, many for the first time.
The donation also supports Tate’s expanding curatorial expertise, with Osei Bonsu appointed as Senior Curator for Africa and Diaspora. The Pérez collection highlights modern and contemporary art from Africa, adding paintings, sculptures, photography, and textiles that reflect diverse histories, cultures, and creative practices.
Maria Balshaw, Tate’s Director, emphasized the gift’s role in shaping a truly global art story, while Jorge Pérez reiterated his dedication to showcasing Africa’s vibrant artistic voice. This generous contribution positions Tate as a leader in celebrating the creativity of Africa and its diaspora worldwide.
