Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Live Arts Miami program announces a new series at Superblue Miami, an experimental art center and gallery. Fusing dance and world music in a stunning immersive art setting, the series will kick off on Saturday, August 12, with a captivating performance by renowned choreographer Mike Tyus with a cohort of Miami movement artists, and a special concert by internationally acclaimed musician Sona Jobarteh on Sunday, August 13.
“We are thrilled to curate this remarkable performing art series at Superblue Miami,” said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of Live Arts Miami, a component of MDC’s Cultural Affairs division. The combination of live art, immersive installations and cutting-edge technology creates an unparalleled experience for the audience. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and the transformative nature of art.”
Superblue Miami, known for its groundbreaking immersive art installations by artists including James Turrell, teamLab, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Es Devlin, provides the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary series. The integration of live performances with the center’s captivating exhibitions takes the audience on a sensory journey, blurring the lines between performer and spectator, and creating an intimate and transformative encounter with the arts.
The series begins with pop-up performances by LA-based choreographer Tyus, who has taken the dance world by storm. He and collaborator Luca Renzi will bring their unique style of contemporary dance — blending improvisation, fluid floor work and physical partnering that challenge the limits of the human body – to Superblue’s Pulse Topology exhibit consisting of 3,000 suspended light bulbs designed by renowned Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.
The following weekend, August 19 – 20, will feature a talented ensemble of Miami-based dancers led by Tyus, who will weave together intricate patterns and mesmerizing formations within the sprawling teamLab 3D exhibition Between Life and Non-Life at Superblue. The performances will be customized to each exhibition and their sensorial activations.
On the evening of August 19, the series will present a special concert by Jobarteh. Hailing from a long line of West African Griots, Jobarteh is a virtuoso on the kora, a traditional West African string instrument. With her soul-stirring voice and unparalleled mastery of the kora, Jobarteh’s music transcends cultural barriers, and will transport listeners to distant realms of melody and rhythm within the immersive, glimmering Pulse Topology installation.
