Passion Pit comes to the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre on Sunday, June 13 at 8:30PM. Tokyo Police Club will open the show.
The Boston, MA-based Passion Pit began as a one-man project of singer and songwriter Michael Angelakos to produce a Valentine’s Day gift for his girlfriend. Eventually, Passion Pit became not only a vehicle for the romantic expressions of Angelakos’ heart but a full-fledged band — at least for live gigs — and opened for a number of well-known artists, including Death Cab for Cutie. This momentum led to label interest, and in 2008 the Frenchkiss label picked up the independent produced Chunk of Change for re-release with the addition of two bonus tracks. The EP, and especially the track “Sleepyhead,” garnered a lot of attention from bloggers and fans of giddy electronic indie pop. Columbia Records also liked what they heard and paired with Frenchkiss to release Manners, the first album by the group in spring of 2009. Redemption. Paranoia. Guilt. And brief glimpses of a better tomorrow, all cloaked in pop hooks that truly help the medicine go down. A real deal album that delivers on blissful and bright promises. It’s all part of a greater plan, the next step of which is taking Passion Pit’s live show to a level that matches, and eventually exceeds, Manners ambition and kaleidoscopic soundscapes.
Toronto’s quirky, high-energy indie rockers Tokyo Police Club feature vocalist/bassist Dave Monks, keyboardist/vocalist Graham Wright, guitarist/percussionist Josh Hook, and drummer/percussionist Greg Alsop. Their first EP A Lesson In Crime garnered accolades from Entertainment Weekly (“We can hardly wait for the full length), Rolling Stone (“If only all young guitar bands were smart enough to rock out this fast, banging out seven first-rate mod-punk party starters in barely more than sixteen minutes”), Interview, Blender, Nylon and The New York Times among others. TPC’s bassist/vocalist David Monks once described the band’s music as “wide-eyed post-punk with a tendency to get over excited-so much so that someone has to come and tell it to settle down,” Their current full length album Elephant Shell is the sound of four early-20-somethings now seasoned through hundreds of shows from tiny clubs to the festival throngs at Coachella and Glastonbury, maturing a bit and learning to temper and modulate their own more varied musical moods.
