Join us for an in-depth reasoning on the styles and fashions that have made Jamaican dancehall music one of Jamaica’s many iconic cultural exports around the globe. Professor Patricia Saunders, of University of Miami, and Professor Donna Hope, of University of the West Indies, Jamaica, will discuss the wisdom and dangers inherent in the con/fusion of the Jamaican colloquialisms “Fashion Ova Style” and “Sell Off,” in contemporary global markets. Before the lecture, from 5–7pm, enjoy a DJ set by Jason Panton and happy hour special on the waterfront terrace.
Leaning into Professor Saunders’ book, “Buyer’s Beware: Insurgency and Consumption in Caribbean Popular Culture,” this conversation will challenge stereotypes around the aesthetic practices of working poor and working-class diaspora subjects, explore the significance of stylizing the Black body, and question the lack of attention to these practices. The discussion also examines how contemporary artists intervene in global commodification dynamics, offering a fresh perspective on agency, performance, and freedom within consumer culture. |
