Michael Tilson Thomas returns for a thrilling season finale that blends music and movement.
Composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer George Balanchine had a decades-long friendship that proved to be one of the most fruitful artistic pairings of its time and led to groundbreaking collaborations including Agon, a 12-part ballet inspired by French court dances.
In 1953, choreographer Jerome Robbins premiered Afternoon of a Faun, a ballet choreographed to Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. The “spare and poetic” dance explores what happens when two people find each other on a summer day in a dance studio (Amanda Vaill, Somewhere: The Life of Jerome Robbins).
Lourdes Lopez, Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, and Michael Tilson Thomas, Artistic Director Laureate of New World Symphony, have transformed art and culture in Miami. Students of Stravinsky and Balanchine respectively, Tilson Thomas and Lopez present a performance that honors the visionaries of the 20th century. You won’t want to miss this special collaboration that sees two artistic leaders – and beloved cultural institutions – joining forces.
