NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Introduces Sensory Saturdays: A Program for Neurodivergent Children

Second Saturday of September, November, and January, as well as the third Saturday of March from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is thrilled to announce the launch of Sensory Saturdays, a pioneering initiative designed to create a sensory-inclusive environment for children aged 6 to 17 with diverse neurodivergent needs, along with their families. As the only museum in Broward certified by KultureCity®, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering inclusivity for individuals with sensory sensitivities, NSU Art Museum is leading the way in accessible art experiences.

Kicking off on the second Saturday of September, November, and January, as well as the third Saturday of March from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Sensory Saturdays offer families an opportunity to engage in creative art-making and explore the museum’s galleries in a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Adjustments such as low lighting and reduced sound levels will be implemented to enhance comfort, ensuring a relaxing visit.

“We are committed to making art accessible to everyone,” said Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator at NSU Art Museum. “Our aim is to foster an environment where every visitor feels valued, celebrating the diverse perspectives that enrich our community.”

In line with its KultureCity® Certification, the museum’s staff and security have undergone training to better address sensory processing needs. Sensory Bags equipped with noise-canceling headphones, weighted lap pads, and other calming resources will be available during museum hours, ensuring that individuals of all ages can enjoy a sensory-friendly experience any time.

“We’re excited to provide a tailored space for neurodivergent children and their families to explore art in a supportive environment,” said Lisa Quinn, Lillian S. Wells Education Curator. “This program exemplifies our ongoing commitment to accessibility. Through our partnership with KultureCity®, we’re striving for inclusiveness beyond just Sensory Saturdays.”

While admission to Sensory Saturdays is free, registration is required one month before each event due to limited spots. The museum kindly requests advance notice for any cancellations to accommodate all interested families.

“NSU Art Museum embodies the spirit of inclusion and innovation alongside KultureCity®, advocating for a world that celebrates every individual’s unique contributions,” added Uma Srivastava, Executive Director of KultureCity®.

This enriching program is made possible through the generous support of the Robert E. Dooley Trust NSU Center for Autism Endowment Fund.
