Eight student playwrights from the NWSA college and high school programs are provided with a rare opportunity to have their original plays produced on the mainstage. The eight original plays, directed by New World School of the Arts theatre faculty members, explore genres ranging from realism to absurd and cover a wide range of topics. “Playwriting begins as a solo endeavor, but it requires the collaboration of actors, directors and technical crew to bring these exciting new works to life,” explained theatre facultySilas Hoover. On stage, guests will get to know Betty, a perfectly manufactured woman with artificial intelligence who goes off script; a unique group of friends who learn to move on from tragedy together; a therapist, the therapist’s therapist, and the therapist’s patients who explore therapy; and a teenager’s left and right brain whose hemispheres come to life to help him make sense of his life, among others.
