Starting February 6, audiences across Florida will have the chance to experience Jimpa, a deeply personal and compassionate film by acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Hyde. Starring Olivia Colman, John Lithgow, and Aud Mason-Hyde, the movie opens in select AMC theatres including The Regency 20 in Tampa-St. Petersburg, Aventura Mall 24 in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, and Orange Park 24 in Jacksonville.
Jimpa tells the tender story of filmmaker Hannah (Colman), who takes her trans nonbinary teen, Frances (Hyde), to Amsterdam to visit their beloved gay grandfather, Jimpa (Lithgow). When Frances expresses a desire to stay abroad with Jimpa for a year, Hannah faces a profound reevaluation of her parenting beliefs and family narratives. The film explores the challenges of aging as a gay man, the complexities of family loyalty, and the evolving nature of love and identity across three generations.
Inspired by Hyde’s own experiences of growing up in a queer family, Jimpa has been praised for its honesty, humor, and authentic portrayals. Critics highlight the layered performances, emotional depth, and gentle exploration of family dynamics, making it a potential new comfort film for LGBTQ+ audiences and allies alike.
Directed by Sophie Hyde, whose previous works include Sundance award winner 52 Tuesdays, the film combines empathy with joy, celebrating the uniqueness and resilience of modern queer families. With a runtime of approximately 113 minutes, Jimpa promises an intimate journey into love, empathy, and connection.
