Miami-Dade Introduces Nation’s First Autonomous Police Vehicle

Miami-Dade County has launched the nation’s first autonomous patrol vehicle, the Police Unmanned Ground (PUG) Patrol Partner, as part of a 12-month pilot program in partnership with Policing Lab and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. This cutting-edge AI-driven vehicle combines advanced sensors, real-time crime data, and autonomous capabilities to enhance community safety.

Equipped with 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, license plate recognition, and drone launch support, the PUG extends deputy resources, improves response times, and boosts officer safety—all at no extra cost to taxpayers. The vehicle will be showcased at public events in Miami, allowing residents to engage and provide feedback via community-facing tablets.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz emphasized Miami-Dade’s leadership in public safety innovation, with outcomes from the pilot helping determine future expansion and potentially setting a national standard for autonomous law enforcement support.
