Amateur pickleball players from across the United States are gearing up for the first-ever South Beach Slam, set to take place on November 17-19. Organized by the city of Miami Beach, the tournament will offer a total prize pool of $12,000 along with $6,000 worth of equipment giveaways.
City Manager Alina T. Hudak expressed her excitement about hosting the event, stating that sports-related tourism is rapidly growing and that Miami Beach’s pristine beaches, luxurious hotels, recreational amenities, and cultural experiences will surely make the tournament a hit among pickleball enthusiasts.
The South Beach Slam, powered by Fisker Inc., will feature ten courts in a waterfall-style setup. The tournament is open to amateur players of all ages who possess a Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR), which can be obtained for free. Participants can register individually and be paired with another player of similar skill level or sign up with a teammate. Registration fees for the tournament are $175 per person. To register or learn more about acquiring a DUPR rating, interested players can visit the official tournament website at www.SouthBeachSlam.com.
Fans and spectators in Miami Beach can catch all the action at the municipal parking lot located at 1665 Lenox Ave. Admission to the doubles tournament is free, and attendees are welcome to bring their leashed pets while keeping them away from fenced play areas. Additionally, a free pickleball clinic and lesson will be held on Friday, November 17, offering the opportunity for newcomers to learn more about the sport.
Fisker Inc., a California-based electric vehicle startup, joins as the official sponsor of the South Beach Slam. The company’s commitment to sustainability aligns with Miami Beach’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact, making it a perfect partnership. Fisker will showcase three of its all-electric SUVs, the Fisker Ocean, at the tournament, emphasizing their use of over 100 lbs. of recycled materials in each vehicle’s construction.
Matthew DeBord, spokesperson for Fisker, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating that the residents of Miami Beach and tournament attendees will have an exceptional experience with the Fisker Ocean. The company’s low carbon footprint and commitment to sustainability resonate with the booming pickleball community.
This event is made possible through partnerships with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District, Major League Pickleball, DUPR, and Oak View Group. The Loews Miami Beach Hotel has been designated as the official host hotel, offering participants and attendees a special promotional rate of $249 per night, subject to availability.
Adding to the experience, participants can stay well-hydrated and fueled at “The Kitchen” by Yard House, while PepsiCo Beverages North America, through their plastic-free partnership with the city, is the official nonalcoholic beverage partner of the tournament. Red Bull will be serving as the official energy drink, ensuring that players remain energized throughout the matches. Wristbands worn by participants will grant them discounts and promotional offerings at various stores and restaurants along the iconic Lincoln Road, including Nike Lincoln Road where registration packages will be available for pickup.
