Mexico’s premier puppet theater troupe Marionetas de la Esquina returns to Miami – January 3 – 5, 2014

Imagen lunaThe Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly announces the return of Mexico’s legendary puppet company, MARIONETAS DE LA ESQUINA with six performances in the Carnival Studio Theater, from January 3 – 5, 2014. The delightful storytelling troupe that has earned dedicated fans in South Florida will reprise their 2009 sold-out show A MOON BETWEEN TWO HOUSES. Performances will be presented in Spanish on January 3 at 2 p.m.,January 4 at 4 p.m., and January 5 at 11 a.m.; and in English on January 3 and 4 at 11 a.m. and January 5 at 4 p.m.

Tickets to MARIONETAS DE LA ESQUINA are $26*, and will go on sale to Arsht Center members beginning November 10 and to the general public beginning November 18.Tickets may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

A MOON BETWEEN TWO HOUSES tells the tale of two neighbors who become friends through their shared fear of the dark. This bilingual show demonstrates that like most things in life, our fears are better shared with friends than faced alone. Recommended for ages 3 to 6.

MARIONETAS DE LA ESQUINA has been entertaining children and adults alike since 1975 and made it sold-out Arsht Center debut in 2009. This family-run theater company has given more than 11,000 performances and 50 workshops and seminars. Since their creation, the company has helped disseminate and develop the art of puppetry in Mexico.MARIONETAS DE LA ESQUINA keeps a repertoire of 10 shows, each a testimony to the company’s wish to experiment with all aspects of puppet theater, from set and puppet design to dramaturgy. The company has a variety of themes, stages, and puppets that have won recognition in Mexico and abroad.

Recognized in 2004 by the National Council for Culture and the Arts of Mexico,MARIONETAS DE LA ESQUINA has been supported through Mexico on Stage, a grant program that celebrates art of the highest caliber. In 2006, company member and playwright Amaranta Leyva was awarded the Mexican National Prize for Children’s Theater. At the International Puppet Festival in Tlaxcala, company directors Lourdes Perez Gay and Lucio Espindola were recipients of the 2012 Rosete Aranda Award, which recognizes achievement for the cultural promotion and proliferation of quality puppet theatre.
