The NEW Elser Hotel & Residences, located in Downtown Miami (398 NE 5th St), will be hosting a cocktail party and art talk to unveil “Lluvia de Lana,” a textile installation by Guatemalan artist Diego Olivero on December 1, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The hotel’s lobby, where the event will take place, will be transformed into a 24/7 art space causing guests to pause and stare in wonder at the long wool threads in an alluring mix of colors cascading from the ceiling.
Olivero has been working with artisans for more than a decade and through his constant exploration he has developed installations in different mixed media. For this piece, he likes to think it talks about the process of wool weaving in Momostenango, Guatemala. Created in 2019 it is made of iron circular structures holding handspun wool using gravity to create vertical cylinders. The wool dyed in different techniques challenges your imagination and is perceived as a solid pour of rain can. A group of more than 60 vertical bodies are visually intriguing and produce a meditative feeling. The artist highlights the hand labor in this natural material as its medium to build a bold and strong wall. Like rain, although each drop is almost imperceptible, a true wall can be “seen” while a heavy rain falls. The event will include lite bites and cocktails.
