Liberty Caribbean, part of Liberty Latin America, is taking proactive steps to support Jamaica’s recovery after Hurricane Melissa. The company will use Spectrum-approved satellite technology via Starlink Direct to Cell to provide emergency mobile connectivity if terrestrial networks are severely impacted.
CEO Inge Smidts announced that the innovative partnership will enable basic SMS and text services in affected areas, ensuring families, businesses, and emergency services stay connected when traditional networks go down. This is Jamaica’s first collaboration of its kind, reflecting a deep commitment to safeguarding the nation’s future and economic stability through reliable, satellite-based communication.
