They’ve survived the storm—now they’re fighting to finish high school and chase their dreams.
In a powerful act of compassion, 125 laptops are making their way into the hands of Florida students who have faced the devastating impacts of hurricanes and homelessness. Donated through the Zakat Foundation of America, these devices aim to bridge the digital divide and ignite hope for some of the state’s most vulnerable youth.
The laptop giveaway will take place on Eid al-Adha, Friday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at Boyd Anderson High School, located at 3050 NW 41st St. in Lauderdale Lakes. As students receive their new tools for learning, organizers emphasize that this isn’t just about technology—it’s about opening doors to opportunities and sending a message of resilience.
Many of these young people come from international backgrounds, fleeing storms and unstable housing to build new lives in the United States. High school senior CM, separated from his parents who are pursuing higher education, shared how the donation gave him more than just a device—it gave him renewed hope. “The biggest thing they gave me was hope—hope that I could still have a future, even when everything seemed impossible,” he said.
This effort is part of an ongoing partnership between Zakat Foundation and the Homeless Education Assistance Resource Team (HEART), which works tirelessly to support unhoused students—many of whom are trying to catch up in an education system that’s often stacked against them. The goal: empower these youth to rise above adversity, equipped with the tools, mentorship, and encouragement they need to succeed.
Zakat Foundation has responded to disasters across the U.S. for more than two decades, but director Lindsey B. emphasizes that recovery isn’t only about food or shelter. “For these Florida students, recovery means a shot at college, a future filled with promise. That starts with a laptop.”
The event coincides with a day of significance—Eid al-Adha—adding a spiritual dimension to the act of giving, reflecting a collective hope for renewal and growth.
Supporters and media outlets are invited to attend and witness this inspiring moment. Donations to sustain and expand such initiatives can be made via the Zakat Foundation’s website under the US programs section.
As a recognized 501(c)(3) organization committed to aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Zakat Foundation continues its mission to foster recovery, development, and dignity for all. The work has garnered coverage from CNN Max, Fox News, WGN, ABC, NBC, and other major outlets, shining a spotlight on stories of resilience and compassion in action.
Because sometimes, all it takes to ignite hope is a simple device—and the kindness of a community willing to make a difference.
