JOSHUA BELL AND THE ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS

Program:

ROSSINI The Barber of Seville Overture
DVOŘÁK
Violin Concerto in A minor, Opus 53
BEETHOVEN Eroica Symphony

Joshua Bell and the Academy, a critically acclaimed combination, welcome Miami audiences back with what promises to be another “performance of greater momentum than many larger orchestras with a conductor on the podium” (South Florida Classical Review).

The evening begins with the overture from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy in music and often described as the ultimate opera buffa, an opera rich in lighthearted and comic antics. The program also includes Dvořák’s Violin Concerto in A minor, a virtuoso work incorporating the spirit of the Czech composer’s homeland that has charmed violinists and audiences around the world. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s dramatic and emotional Eroica (meaning “heroic”), a work that is credited with elevating the symphony into a work of art in its own right.

Created exclusively for this Miami engagement, the evening will be a collaborative chamber music performance with MIAMI CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY‘s (MCMS) roster of musicians, world-renowned sopranoLARISA MARTÍNEZ, first prize-winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition cellist ZLATOMIR FUNG, award-winning pianist MARINA RADIUSHINA, and a world premiere of a ballet choreographed by the distinguished Danish choreographer PONTUS LIDBERG and performed by the MIAMI CITY BALLET.

Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS gave its first performance in its namesake church in November 1959. Through unrivalled live performances and a vast recording output, the Academy quickly gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished and refined sound. Today, the Academy is led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, retaining the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble which has become an Academy hallmark. With a career spanning over 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, conductor and director, Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. Named the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, he is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner.
