JAMES HOLLOWAY at the AMERICAN BLACK FILM FESTIVAL

James Holloway is a rising star of film and stage and will be in Miami June 23 – 26 promoting his film The Cycle, which has been accepted into HBO’s Short Film Competition.

Based on actual events, The Cycle takes place in the modern-day Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, a neighborhood that was once synonymous with crime, drugs, and poverty. Over the past 15 years, it has experienced a renaissance and has become one of the hottest neighborhoods for renters and home-buyers in New York City. In this short film, the fallout from an ongoing gentrification process comes to life. The film centers around the theft of an eight-year-old girl’s bicycle. After Corinne’s bike is stolen right outside her mother’s charming neighborhood bookstore, the mother, Crystal, decides to call the police, splitting the neighborhood in half. Some individuals see this as an act of betrayal, while others choose to join the search for the stolen bicycle. As events unfold, underlying tensions in the neighborhood begin to surface. Will the search for a child’s bicycle unite this fragile community or ignite a conflict that could blow it apart?

James has enjoyed recent success with two short films that have really helped put him on the verge of stardom. This is the second year in a row that one of James’s films has been nominated at HBO’s Short Film Competition. Last year The Roe Effect, a short film by Kiel Adrian Scott, won the award and was nominated for the prestigious Black Reel Award along with a run on HBO. More recently, The Roe Effect has been accepted into Canne’s Film Festival’s Short Film Corner.

As comfortable in front of a camera, as he is on stage, James Holloway has been blessed with opportunities. These opportunities have landed James in Scott Rudin’s Freedomland, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore, and in Aleta Chappelle’s documentary Harlem Children’s Theater. But its his two most recent project that have garnered him the most attention, two short films that have been making their way around the film festival circuit and have found themselves airing on HBO and BET. James has been recognized by the First Run Film Festival in New York with The Craft Award for Jackson Parish, which was also just accepted to the San Diego Black Film Festival and has been aired on BET as part “Lens On Talent” series hosted by Sanaa Lathan. He will also be featured in Letoya Luckett’s music video for “Good To Me” and has been cast as the new voice of the Boostup.org campaign.

He has also been seen on television in NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” and has had a reoccurring role on One Life to Live. James has been featured in television commercials for Sprint, Olive Garden, and MTV. He has also supplied voice-overs for AT&T, 9IX cologne by Jay-Z, McDonald’s, and the US Army. In addition, James has done print work, including an ad in Men’s Health magazine for MBNA.

But like most rising talents, he started on the stage, beginning with the Freedom Theater in Philadelphia, where he received a writing credit for his work with award-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, developing the play A Walk Through Time. James graduated with a B.F.A. from the Conservatory of Acting at the State University of New York. Shortly after graduating he has working on stage and getting raves including Variety who praised James for his “keenly drawn hostile edge,”and Peter Felicia of the Star Ledger said “The most glorious – – and painful – – moments of “History of the Word” are provided by James Holloway, who makes his points with the self-assurance.”   in the Tony Award-winning Crossroads Theater production of History of the Word.. His work in August Wilson’s  Fences, moved the The Philadelphia Inquirer to note his “compelling intensity” and praised his scenes as “the show’s best.”

James Holloway is charming, intelligent, easy on the camera, and is quick on his way of becoming a household name.
