Grab your sombreros and join Eduardo Durazo of Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar and Latam Grill and owners of Le Bouchon du Grove, Green Street Cafe and George’s to celebrate the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo. The annual event – named Fête du Cinco de Mayo – will be held Wednesday, May 5th from 8pm to 12am in Coconut Grove and will include live Mariachi sounds, specialty drinks, appetizers, prizes and much more at the three participating restaurants which are all located within a short distance from one another.
Durazo created Fête du Cinco de Mayo to commemorate in a festive way the unique history shared by France and Mexico at the “Batalla de Puebla.” It was at that battle on the fifth day of May 1862, that Napoleon III’s army was defeated by General Ignacio Zaragoza while trying to enforce debt payments. Despite the tumultuous past history between the two nations, Jaguar and the French-owned restaurants look to begin a forward-thinking tradition of unity for Cinco de Mayo between the Mexicans and the French.
“The Battle of Puebla marked Mexican and French history in different ways. We created Fête du Cinco de Mayo to reflect unity and celebrate history, not just winners,” comments Durazo. “I wish patriots of all countries could get beyond history and focus on the world their children will live in: peaceful and united,” added George’s owner Georges Eric Farge.
Servers from all establishments will dress up in Mexican and French costumes, accompanied by mariachis and accordionist, and offer “their country’s” specialty appetizers and drinks to patrons. Along with these “culinary exchanges,” several prizes will be raffled.
