A redefining moment for women in music
Louise Farrenc challenged societal norms, securing her legacy as a trailblazing figure and formidable presence in classical music. A virtuoso pianist, pioneering scholar and prolific composer, she was the Paris Conservatory’s only female tenured professor, earning significantly less pay than her male counterparts.
Despite the lack of equality in 19th-century Paris, she composed several orchestral symphonies and overtures. Her chamber music, however, made the biggest impact in reshaping her career. After a decade of advocating for change and following the successful premiere of her Nonet in E-flat major, she was finally granted equal pay at the Paris Conservatory, where she remained for 30 years. Over time, she became one of the greatest piano professors in Europe. Go her!
