FAA Announces Emergency Flight Cuts at 40 Major U.S. Airports Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown extends into its longest period, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced emergency flight reductions at 40 major U.S. airports starting Friday, with flights decreasing by 4% initially and potentially up to 10% next week. Major hubs affected include New York, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, and Seattle, causing disruptions ahead of the holiday season.

Attorney Jason Matzus warns that these reductions highlight severe safety concerns. Staff shortages among air traffic controllers, inspectors, and maintenance personnel—working without pay—are straining the system, risking safety and undermining decades of trust in U.S. aviation.

“The longer the shutdown continues, the greater the threat to safety,” Matzus said. He emphasizes that this situation reflects how critical infrastructure becomes collateral in political disputes, with potential consequences for passengers and aviation personnel alike.

Matzus Law, based in Pittsburgh, advocates for victims of aviation negligence and calls for systemic reforms to ensure safety and stability in the industry during these challenging times.
