Early Learning Coalition Celebrates "Read Across America Day" on March 2

The Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe will support the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day with county-wide readings and book drop-offs. The Coalition, which welcomes more community volunteers to participate, hopes to spread the word throughout the community about the importance of reading at an early age as well as distribute a set of Dr. Seuss books consisting of six popular titles at each of the centers.

WHO: The Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe County, its board of directors and volunteers will participate by visiting early learning centers, donating books and reading to the children.

PHOTO OP: At the Shores School Center in Miami, guests and students will celebrate one of Dr. Seuss’ most popular stories by enjoying a “Green Eggs & Ham”-style breakfast, courtesy of Roasters’ n Toasters on South Dixie Highway in Miami. The Shores School serves an 85% Haitian population, whose families have been impacted by Haiti’s earthquake.

Helping to serve breakfast to the youngsters, and available for on-site interviews to discuss the importance of Read Across America Day and early developmental learning, are:

Evelio C. Torres, President and CEO, Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe.

Tabatha Cullen, Sr. Director of Communications and Community Affairs, Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade Monroe

WHEN: Tuesday, March 2, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

BACKGROUND: The National Education Association launched Read Across America Day in 1998 to call on children to celebrate reading, as research shows that children who are motivated to read, and read with greater frequency, do better in school. To-date it is considered one of the largest reading events in the United States.
