Chrysler Museum of Art Announces

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm

FIRST time 250 images from personal archive on exhibition in the U.S.

The Chrysler Museum of Art is set to unveil a remarkable exhibition featuring 250 curated photographs taken by legendary musician Paul McCartney. Titled “Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-1964: Eyes of the Storm,” the exhibition offers an intimate glimpse into the early days of Beatlemania.

Running from December 5, 2023, through April 7, 2024, this exclusive exhibition showcases McCartney’s personal collection of photographs captured between December 1963 and February 1964. As the Beatles skyrocketed from being the most adored band in the United Kingdom to global music sensations, McCartney discreetly wielded his Pentax camera to document their extraordinary journey.

The Chrysler Museum has collaborated with McCartney’s photographic curator and archivist, Sarah Brown, and its Senior Curator, Lloyd DeWitt, to carefully assemble this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit. Following its successful debut at the National Portrait Gallery in London earlier this year, “Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-1964: Eyes of the Storm” will now captivate audiences at the Chrysler Museum of Art.

Visitors to the exhibition will be immersed in the experience of the storm that surrounded the Beatles during this pivotal period, as they view photographs and video footage capturing the Fab Four’s rise to fame. The images range from McCartney’s shots of the band performing in Liverpool and London, to the Beatles’ historic appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in New York, which garnered a record-breaking 73 million viewers.

Reflecting on the photographs, McCartney shared, “Every picture brings back memories. I can try and place where we were and what we were doing to either side of the frame. Pictures of us with the photographers bring back memories of being in New York for the first time… I remember all those stories.”

Sarah Brown will be present at the Chrysler Museum to meet with media, answer questions, and lead guided tours of the exhibition before it opens to the public. This unique opportunity allows visitors to gain deeper insights into McCartney’s photographic perspective and the significance of each image.

The Chrysler Museum of Art, recognized as one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums, showcases a diverse collection of over 30,000 objects, including a notable glass collection. The museum’s commitment to inclusivity is demonstrated through its innovative gallery host program. Additionally, the museum houses the Perry Glass Studio, a state-of-the-art facility that offers aspiring and master artists various glassworking techniques.
