BONY RAMIREZ MUSA COCCINEA TEMPORARY MURAL
Musa Coccinea takes its name from the scientific designation of the Scarlet Banana, a plant that belongs to the same family as the common banana but is distinguished by its vibrant yellow flower. The mural features a figure that stands tall and graceful before the viewer, inspired by classic portraiture. This figure commands attention and respect, surrounded by palm leaves and plantain trees, creating a striking contrast with her lush dress. She embodies Caribbean beauty and power. By using the scientific name of this plant, Bony honors its origins, reflecting his dedication to celebrating the Caribbean and its roots. This mural is part of a series featuring three Musa paintings, with “Musa” being the first name in the classification of banana trees. “Coccinea” refers to the specific variation, while “Musa” in Spanish means “muse,” symbolizing the strength and beauty of the female figures depicted, each appearing alone yet powerful. Bony Ramirez is a Dominican-born artist who lives and works in New York. Ramirez paints surreal images of contemporary Caribbean life, as well as reimagining colonial histories. He engages with Western European painting traditions as a way to think about the colonial influence still present in the Caribbean.
