The BIG3 basketball league is set to tip off its eighth season this summer with a game-changing announcement: for the first time, all teams will represent specific cities, including a brand-new franchise in Miami. The highly anticipated season kicks off on June 14, 2025, as the league fully transitions to a location-based model, embracing the passionate fans of Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, the DMV metropolitan area, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

“This is a landmark moment in our league,” said BIG3 Co-CEO Ice Cube. “These cities have shown up for us year after year, and we are honored to represent and reward those fans with a new franchise of their own. The basketball energy in these cities is unmatched, and we’ve seen first-hand the power of their fanbases.”

The Miami franchise is expected to bring electrifying 3-on-3 action to the Magic City, capturing the vibrant spirit and diverse culture that Miami is known for. With a fresh roster of players and coaching staff, fans can anticipate a thrilling style of play that showcases the talent and competitive spirit of local athletes.

The BIG3 has a proven track record of attracting world-class players, including Hall of Famers and Olympic stars, but this year marks a significant departure from its previous touring model. Each franchise will sport new rosters and a unique identity that resonates with the respective city’s culture and basketball heritage.

“While throughout its history the BIG3 has generated millions of fans, we found it challenging to create fans for specific teams that were not aligned with cities,” emphasized Jeff Kwatinetz, co-CEO of the league. “This transition allows us to deepen the connections between players and their communities and enhance the competitive nature of our league.”

Big names like Clyde Drexler, the league’s first black commissioner and a basketball icon, anticipate that local representation will bolster fan loyalty and engagement. “Getting an opportunity to deepen connections by basing teams in their cities is a task our players hold in high esteem,” Drexler stated. “What’s good for our fans is good for our players, coaches, and the league at large.”

As part of its commitment to innovation and community engagement, BIG3 has led the sports industry in diversity, implementing progressive policies that foster mental health awareness and advocate for alternative pain management methods. The league has made strides in promoting inclusivity, with female coaches taking the spotlight and supporting opportunities for underrepresented groups in sports.

Set against the backdrop of Miami’s lively atmosphere, the new franchise aims to tap into the city’s deep-rooted passion for basketball, where street courts thrive and talent abounds. The full season schedule will be released soon, and fans can expect home games that echo with cheers, celebrations, and the unmistakable rhythm of Miami’s vibrant culture.

With an eye toward future expansion, Ice Cube and Kwatinetz plan to add four additional markets in 2026, hinting at a bright future for the BIG3. Their vision of blending entertainment with sporting excellence continues to evolve, ensuring that every game is steeped in intensity—and every point counts.

Buckle up, Miami—your BIG3 journey begins this summer!
