Arts & Culture
YoungArts has been identifying the most talented young artists in the United States since 1981. The alumni list reads like a catalog of American cultural life over the past four decades: Viola Davis, Timothée Chalamet, Nicki Minaj, Kerry Washington, Desmond Richardson, Andrew Rannells. These are not people who passed through a program and moved on. They are people whose careers were shaped, in part, by the recognition and support they received from YoungArts at a formative moment.
The organization's national competition identifies approximately 700 winners each year from more than 11,000 applicants across visual arts, design arts, film, music, theater, voice, and writing. Winners receive cash awards, access to master classes and workshops, and — for the top honorees — the opportunity to be nominated as Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the highest honor the United States government bestows on young artists.
The Campus on Biscayne Boulevard
YoungArts is headquartered in Miami, in a campus on Biscayne Boulevard that includes performance spaces, studios, and galleries. The campus is a working arts facility — not a museum or a ceremonial space, but a place where artists make work. The YoungArts Week programming, held each January, brings winners to Miami for a week of intensive workshops, performances, and exhibitions. The gala on January 9 opens that week.
PGM has the YoungArts Voice Performance event in our database — one of the performances that takes place during YoungArts Week. The gala is the evening that funds the week, and the week is the program that funds the year. The January 9 gala is the first major event of the 2027 gala season, and it sets the tone for what follows.
What the Investment Produces
The argument for YoungArts is straightforward: identifying exceptional young artists early and giving them resources, recognition, and community produces better artists and a stronger cultural ecosystem. The alumni record supports that argument. The organization has been making this investment in Miami for more than forty years, and Miami's cultural life is richer for it.
The YoungArts Miami Gala takes place January 9 at the YoungArts Campus, 2100 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Tickets and table information are available through YoungArts. For a gala season that runs from November through June, this is the one that opens the new year — and the one that is most directly invested in what Miami's cultural life looks like in twenty years.

Florida Grand Opera has been performing in South Florida since 1941 — before the Arsht Center existed, before Miami had a world-class concert hall, before the city had the cultural infrastructure to support a major opera company. It built that infrastructure anyway.

Before the New World Symphony, Miami did not have a serious claim to being a world-class cultural city. That changed in 1987 when Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Arison founded an orchestra built on a different premise.
