The People Who Shaped This City: HistoryMiami's History Icon Awards
HistoryMiami is the institution that holds Miami's memory. The History Icon Awards is the evening when that memory is made public — when the people and stories that shaped the city are named, honored, and placed in the record.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
Arts & Culture
HistoryMiami is the institution that holds Miami's memory. The museum's collection spans the Tequesta people who lived on the Miami River before European contact, through the Flagler era, through the boom-and-bust cycles of the 20th century, through the waves of immigration that made Miami the city it is today. The History Icon Awards is the evening when that memory is made public — when the people and stories that shaped the city are named, honored, and placed in the record.
The gala takes place February 9 at HistoryMiami Museum in downtown Miami. The History Icon Awards honors individuals and organizations whose contributions to Miami's history and culture have been significant enough to warrant permanent recognition. Past honorees have included architects, civic leaders, artists, journalists, and community organizers — the people who built the city's infrastructure, physical and cultural, over the past century.
Why This One Sits in PGM's Lane
Premier Guide Miami has been building an archive of Miami's cultural history since the beginning. Our Show Logs section documents concerts and performances going back to 2009. Our History section covers the moments that defined the city — the Heat championships, the Art Basel years, the Formula 1 arrival, the Messi signing. We have been in the room for a significant portion of Miami's recent cultural history, and we have been writing about the longer history that preceded us.
The History Icon Awards is the gala that most directly reflects that sensibility. It is not a fundraiser for a hospital or a social service organization — it is a celebration of the city's story. That makes it unusual in a gala season that is otherwise dominated by healthcare, education, and social services philanthropy.
The Museum's Role in the City
HistoryMiami occupies a building in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center complex on Flagler Street — the same complex that houses the Miami-Dade Public Library and the Miami Art Museum (now PAMM). The museum's permanent collection includes more than two million objects, photographs, and documents. Its research center is the primary archive for Miami-Dade County history.
The History Icon Awards gala funds the museum's exhibitions, educational programs, and collection preservation. For a city that moves as fast as Miami does — where buildings are demolished and neighborhoods are transformed within years — the work of preserving the record is not ceremonial. It is urgent. Tickets and table information are available through HistoryMiami.
