Tabatha Coffey on Tabatha's Salon Takeover Season 3: "I Have Never in My Life Seen a Stripper Pole in the Middle of a Salon"

Bravo's no-nonsense stylist and salon owner Tabatha Coffey returned for Season 3 of Tabatha's Salon Takeover, premiering Monday, December 6 at 10 PM ET/PT. Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Coffey about her craziest salon of the season — a 450-square-foot Provincetown salon with a stripper pole where clients were encouraged to dance for dollars off their haircuts — and her most important advice for first-time salon owners: passion alone is not enough without a solid business plan, finances, and a true vision.

Bravo's no-nonsense stylist and salon owner Tabatha Coffey returned for Season 3 of Tabatha's Salon Takeover, premiering Monday, December 6 at 10 PM ET/PT. This season, Coffey visited struggling salons in California, Massachusetts, and Texas — including Mia Bella (San Bruno, CA), Christopher Hill (Brentwood, CA), Vendome (Houston, TX), West End (Provincetown, MA), Avanti (Boston, MA), Touch of Elegance (Tewkesbury, MA), Bqute (Palmdale, CA), A Star Is Born (Mission Viejo, CA), and Concerto (Valencia, CA). Coffey also has a memoir coming from Harper Collins: "It's Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty."

On her craziest salon of the season: "They're all a little crazy in their own way but I think my craziest salon this season was definitely when we went to Provincetown. I have never in my life seen a stripper pole in the middle of a salon. It was 450 square feet — incredibly small — and smack in the middle was a stripper pole where clients were encouraged to dance for dollars. For every minute they spent on the pole they'd get a dollar off their haircut."

Love Miami

Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.

On whether the stripper pole marketing worked: "Some clients — it didn't work as well as the owner anticipated, strangely enough. I actually saw clients fleeing out of the salon when they were offered to get on the stripper pole and dance to get money off their product sales or their haircuts. So it wasn't a great marketing tactic at all."

On advice for first-time salon owners: "I think if a stylist is opening a business for the first time it's really about preparation. Anyone who opens a business thinks, 'I'm great at what I do and that's enough to carry me through.' But it's really making sure that you have a great, solid business plan, that you have your finances in place, that you have a company statement, that you've thought about the location and the demographic of your clients. It's great to have a great skill and a passion for what you do, but you need to make sure that you've really laid it out on paper and have a true vision of what you want your business to be and what you want it to become so that you can sustain yourself all the way through."
