Ben McKenzie Made a Crypto Documentary That Rotten Tomatoes Calls 100% Fresh — It's Now Streaming

Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
Ben McKenzie is best known for The O.C., Southland, and Gotham. He also has a degree in economics, and in 2021 he found himself down a cryptocurrency rabbit hole. He knew immediately something was off. What followed was a years-long investigation that produced a New York Times bestselling book and now a documentary: Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, currently sitting at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film traces how crypto became one of the most aggressively marketed financial products of the modern era — a promise of financial freedom that evolved into a volatile ecosystem rife with fraud and reckless speculation, with devastating consequences for everyday people. McKenzie pulls back the curtain through firsthand reporting, expert interviews, and a clear-eyed examination of major collapses and scandals. The question the film keeps asking: who benefits from the chaos, and who is left to clean up the damage?
Variety called it 'a lively, knife-sharp, impeccably researched and reported documentary.' The Austin Chronicle called it 'an electrifying watch.' The film features Morena Baccarin, Sam Bankman-Fried, Alex Mashinsky, and Gerard Butler, with music by Martin Crane. McKenzie has been a vocal opponent of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which was recently defeated in Congress.
Everyone Is Lying to You for Money is now available to rent or purchase on Prime and streaming on Kanopy through library networks across the country. It will expand to additional streaming platforms before the end of the year.
