June 6th for “Restore the Shore,” a hands-on coastal restoration volunteer event focused on removing invasive plant species threatening native shoreline ecosystems at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park.
Hosted in collaboration with Coastlove and Miami Waterkeeper, this collaborative workday is limited to 25 volunteers dedicated to protecting and restoring Miami’s coastal habitat.
Location: Historic Virginia Key Beach Park
Date: June 6th, 2026
Volunteer Workday: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Check-In: 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM
When entering the Park, you can ask the gate attendant where is the Chiki Hut Village is.
The morning will begin with a short debriefing from 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM covering the invasive species we will be targeting and proper removal techniques. Target species will be clearly marked with bright pink tape throughout the work area.
The two primary invasive species being removed include:
• Brazilian Pepper
• An invasive variety of Scaevola
These species aggressively outcompete native coastal vegetation and disrupt important shoreline ecosystems. By removing them, volunteers will directly contribute to improving habitat health and supporting future native restoration efforts.
Please note this is the first phase of a larger restoration initiative. A future volunteer event focused on native plant installations and shoreline replanting will be announced soon.
We recommend volunteers wear:
• Closed-toe shoes
• Long pants
• Lightweight long sleeves if possible
Water and light refreshments/snacks will be provided.
Thank you for helping us Restore the Shore and protect Miami’s coastline one step at a time.
