| GableStage’s 27th season comes to a close with the South Florida premiere of Eureka Day (May 15 – June 14, 2026) by Tony Award–winning playwright Jonathan Spector. Fresh from Broadway, this hilarious comedy delivers a razor-sharp satire of well-meaning progressivism pushed to its limits.
At Eureka Day School in Berkeley, California, scones and militant inclusivity rule the weekly board meetings. Led by a Rumi-reciting headmaster, a group of civically engaged, ultra-enlightened parents can only act through strict consensus. But when a mumps outbreak forces the community to confront its liberal vaccine policy, the board faces its ultimate nightmare: making a decision that won’t please absolutely everyone. |

| Directing at GableStage for the first time is Zoetic Stage Founding Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer. The production stars South Florida favorites Rita Cole (The White Card), Jeni Hacker (The Thanksgiving Play), and Ryan Didato (White Guy on the Bus), and introduces Jordyn Moone in her GableStage debut. The cast also includes Barrington Stage Associate Artist and GableStage company member Mark H. Dold (Harry Clarke). New World School of the Arts alum Sarah Rome Guerra will play the role of Suzanne, typically performed by Jeni Hacker, for all performances May 20–24. Together, they navigate a minefield of identity politics, internet pile-ons, and gluten-free scones.
“Jonathan Spector’s insightful, funny, and truthful play Eureka Day is a perfect theatrical event, promising to leave South Florida audiences talking about a play that sits firmly on the pulse of the American zeitgeist, surprising all of us along the way,” said Stuart Meltzer. “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with Bari Newport and the GableStage team. It’s been a long time coming.” Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport adds, “This is a play I’ve been trying to produce since 2019. Fortunately, time has only made it funnier.” Eureka Day was originally commissioned and produced by Berkeley’s Aurora Theatre Company in 2018, followed by subsequent productions in New York and internationally, including its European premiere at The Old Vic in London. The play made its Broadway debut in 2024, where it received widespread recognition and major honors, including the 2025 Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Drama League Award for Best Revival of a Play. Jonathan Spector is a Tony Award-winning playwright based in Oakland, California, whose work has been produced on and off-Broadway, regionally, and internationally. His play Birthright premiered at Miami New Drama in 2025. He is currently under commission with Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout Theatre Company, and La Jolla Playhouse. Eureka Day is presented by Zelda Kloner’s Gift Fund / Heidi Berghuis with additional support by Gene C. Sulzberger in memory of Beverley Sulzberger.
The 27th Season is made possible by the City of Coral Gables Cultural Arts Division, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. |
